The following guidelines will help you comply with safety regulations and make buying fire extinguishers easy.

OSHA Requirements for Fire Extinguishers Local or General Contractor Requirements for Fire Extinguishers
Single Story Building:
(1) 10 lb Fire Extinguisher for every 3,000 sq. ft. and within 100 ft. of any point.
Mechanized Equipment
(1) 5 lb Fire Extinguisher on each piece of mechanized equipment.
Multi-Story Building:
(1) 10 lb Fire Extinguisher per floor (every 3,000 sq. ft.)
(1) 10 lb Fire Extinguisher at each stairwell access
Vehicles:
(1) 2 1/2 lb Fire Extinguisher on each vehicle (excluding private vehicles in parking areas).
Fuel Storage Sites:
(1) 10 lb Fire Extinguisher within 50 ft. of every fuel storage site of 5 gallons or more.
Temporary Storage Sites:
(1) 5 lb Fire Extinguisher in each temporary storage site (includes tool trailers, equipment trailers, material storage).
Welders & Torches:
(1) 5 lb Fire Extinguisher within reach of every welder and torch.
Office Trailers:
(1) 5 lb Fire Extinguisher in each jobsite office trailer (3,000 sq. ft. rule applies).

Not intended as a substitute for automatic sprinkler systems, fixed pre-engineered or engineered extinguishing systems.
